The cat who slides
Between the sheets sparks off
Miniature lightning.

Stumble through the snow crust.
Cat trots on top.

Dogs sniff the snow prints
Of last night's passing rabbit --
Black noses capped with white.

Through bare branches, lights the panes
Of empty turrets.

Lost kitten

My thumb remembers
The sleepy kitten's damp throat
Curled round it, thrumming

Dove at the feeding station

He kicks up snow, guards
His hoard from flocking starlings --
No time to eat.

Winter calf

The winter calf gulps
warm milk from the udder
ankle-deep in snow.
